Way back in
2018, I was in the last year of my graduation.
When you
are in the last year of your college, you try to make more and more memories in
a short period so does I.
The night outs
which we do occasionally in our first two years, now we were doing more often.
To create
ample memories in a short period, a trip with friends is the best option.
We made a
one-day trip to Agra to visit Agra Fort and Taj Mahal.
We try to
do our reservations, but it didn’t happen, we didn’t get reserved seats.
It is just
a 3-hour journey from Delhi to Agra, we decided to board the train with general
tickets in our hands.
We are a group
of 7 people, 4 boys, and 3 girls.
We went to
Nizamuddin Station to board Taj Express in the morning.
That day,
there was too much crowd in the general compartment and because of that, we landed
in the reservation compartment (Second Sitting).
It is
normal for people who do daily up down in trains to board reservation coaches
with general tickets. We also did the same thing.
The train
departed and reach Agra Cantt. Station on time.
As we step
down from the train, a ticket collector asked for tickets. We know normally
ticket collectors allow people to stand in reservation coaches with general
tickets.
We think he
will let us go after seeing our tickets. But that didn’t happen.
That day,
it was not a normal checking, it was Magistrate Checking and in this, all the
rules should be followed strictly.
They asked
all four boys of our group to gather with other people who have a similar case.
They said
they will not take a fine from girls but we have to pay the fine of all four of
us.
They take
around 15 people in custody and took all of them including us in railway lock
up.
It was a strange feeling to be in lock up for the first time in my life (Hopefully first
and last time).
The lockup is on the verge of collapse, a temporary roof made up of concrete sheets, we were able to see sunlight coming from some holes in sheets.
The strongest thing in the whole cell was its gate, which is made of iron, i.e., the traditional jail gate that we saw in movies.
The gate and smell coming from lockup give the complete vibe of a typical jail.
While entering the jail, we don't even know how much fine we have to pay or how much time we will spend in that dark cell. And then,
Three men from the railway magistrate office came and said, “you all have to pay a fine of Rs. 1250 per head in next 6 hours or you will be taken to railway court after that and disciplinary action will be taken against you.”
Even in
this situation, we are thinking that we can negotiate with these people.
But when
they said to a defense person that you have to give a fine, there is no quota
for defense in railways, at that moment we realize that they will only release
us after we pay fine.
After wasting around 1:30 hours in that lockup, we decided to give fine and start our trip in Agra.
But stars favor us, one of our friends (girl) who was outside the cell has a friend in Agra,
she called him and tell him the situation.
Her friend reaches
the station in just 20 minutes and stopped us to pay the fine. We told him,
that we need to pay the fine to come out from this cell and we only have one
day to explore and we have to go to Delhi in the evening.
He said,
let me try for 15 minutes.
His uncle
was a railway contractor, he called him and his uncle said not to pay any
fine.
He was on station premises for his work.
He talked
to the officials and we all four were released after spending 2 hours in that small
lockup.
He said as
it is a magistrate checking we need to give the fine but not the amount that
the railway officials asked from us earlier.
We paid Rs. 340 per head and give our ID proofs for railway fine, get our fine receipts.
After coming out of the whole scenario we change our plans as we have almost lost our two hours at the railway station.
The first thing in our plan was to have a good lunch as we are exhausted in the cell and then visit the two places on our list.
In the evening, we came back to the
station to get the same train, but this time we get our reservations done in the
current quota.
While heading towards Delhi in the evening, I realized that the memories that we have created in the fort and Taj Mahal are not even one percent of the memories that we have created in those two hours in Railway Station Jail.
PS: On that day, I got the real meaning of the lines, “It's all about the journey, not the Destinations.”
